Natural Remedies for Gum Disease

Gum disease is nothing to play around with; it can cause serious dental and health problems.  While there are many products on the market, natural remedies for gum disease are your best bet. By choosing natural treatments for gum disease, you can restore your dental health without any harmful chemicals.

Progression of Gum Disease

The first symptoms of gum disease are usually swollen, sore, red gums. There may be pain while eating or brushing. Inflammation of the gums is an indication that you need to take better care of your teeth by brushing and flossing on a regular basis.

Painful, bleeding gums indicate that there is infection in the deeper of the tissues and even in the bone. This condition is called periodontitis. Periodontitis causes cavities, but it is a significant cause of tooth loss in adults over the age of 30. Other symptoms of periodontitis include:

• Receding gums
• Mouth sores
• Mouth pain
• Tender, swollen gums
• Persistent bad breath
• Bleeding gums when brushing or eating
• Pus in the gums or between teeth
• Teeth separate, creating widening gaps between

If you have Gum Disease you aren’t Healthy

In 2000, the Surgeon General for the United States Public Health Service released a report, “Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General.”  It drew a distinct line connecting oral health and overall wellness, “We know that the mouth reflects general health and wellbeing.”

So if your gums aren’t healthy then neither are you. There are many contributing factors here including poor diet, poor brushing habits, tobacco use and failure to floss. But in the end it all comes down to your overall health — and it shows up in the health of your mouth. You may have loose teeth or gum recession. Can receding gums be reversed naturally? Yes, they can, but you need to remove the root problems.

Why Chemical Laden Products just don’t Work

Many over the counter products on the market today are filled with chemicals and simply are not good for you. They tend to act as a band aid instead of attacking the root of the problem.  Most only mask the problem for a while or treat symptoms instead of the cause.

What’s more, many of the chemicals and additives in these treatments are toxic to humans. In laboratory studies several of the most common chemicals and additives for gum disease medications caused illness, deformity and tumors in rats.

Natural is always the Best Choice

Choosing natural remedies for gum disease is always your best option. These natural remedies will help heal your mouth, protect it from infection and give you fresh, clean breath.

Mouthwash

Add 1 teaspoon each lavender, peppermint and rosemary in a cup of boiling water. Let steep for 15 minutes, strain, cool. This makes a refreshing, cleansing, soothing mouthwash. These ingredients have astringent and healing properties. Swish it thoroughly in your mouth for several minutes. You can also gargle with it. It also works well on a sore throat.

Apple cider vinegar is a wonderful natural remedy for many ailments. If you don’t have any raw, unfiltered, organic apple cider vinegar on hand then you definitely need to stock up! It is a great antiseptic and has some amazing healing properties.

Add ¼ cup ACV and a stick or two of Ceylon (real cinnamon) to 2 cups boiling water. Let it cool and use as a mouthwash.  Make sure that the ACV is raw, organic and unfiltered.

Tooth Cleansers

There are some things you can brush your teeth with that are better than the toothpaste you get in the store. Rub your teeth and gums with a fresh strawberry that has been cut in half. Let it sit for 15 minutes then swish a little water in your mouth and brush gently. This is very good for your gums.

You can put this homemade toothpaste in a decorative soap pump and it will keep just fine. Combine ½ cup slightly softened coconut oil (virgin, not processed or hydrogenated — you can get it at your local health food store or on the organic section of your grocery store), 2 — 3 tablespoons baking soda, 10 — 20 drops of essential oil (peppermint or cinnamon) and stevia to taste (you can also use xylitol). You can also use clove for its healing and soothing properties. Combine well and use as you would any toothpaste then rinse with your apple cider vinegar mouthwash.

More Tips for Natural Dental Care

For sore, infected or inflamed gums, apply raw, organic honey, a green tea bag steeped in hot water or clove oil directly to the affected area. Try not to get these on your teeth too much, although you can get the clove oil on your teeth. It is also great for toothaches.

Natural remedies for gum disease can help you stay healthier by promoting whole body wellness. Before you reach for chemical laden ‘remedies’ that only cover up problems, take a look and see what healing characteristics many natural ingredients provide. For example, oils of almond, spearmint and peppermint have been used for years. Just because an ingredient is new (i.e., manufactured) does not mean that it is superior. Due to an increased awareness of chemicals in dental products, there are today options for toothpaste without fluoride and other chemicals
